Are We Ever Too Old To Learn?

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Is age 19 too old to learn how to box? Deontay Wilder didn't think so. Deontay describes himself as having been a quiet kid who got into fights with bullies - fights that sent him to a school for at-risk kids when he was in 7th grade. Fortunately, that turned Deontay's life around and he later went to college on a basketball scholarship. However, when Deontay's daughter was born with a spinal defect, he had to drop out of college and get a job to pay her medical expenses. That's when he started to fight again - but this time in a ring. When Deontay was 22 he won the bronze medal for heavyweight boxing at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He didn't think he was too old to learn and the boys who work out at the same gym aren't too old to learn from his example.

Ever Had One Of Those Daze?

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Last Thursday was one of those "daze" I should have stayed in bed. The day began with me, my family and my job in balance. By the end of the day I had trouble balancing toothpaste on my toothbrush.

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Ever since Seinfeld went off the air in 1998, fans have been mourning the absence of comedian Jerry Seinfeld from network television. That all changed, however, on Feb. 28, when NBC offered a sneak peak at his new show The Marriage Ref after the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics.

How Do You Manage Home Management?

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

I'm an in-house manager for a non-profit that's dedicated to furthering the understanding of human development in the 21st century - or at least that's what I tell strangers at social functions. It's party-speak for saying I'm a wife and mother. If I'm asked, I explain I qualified for my position by getting a bachelor in public affairs - and then I married the bachelor.

Do Old Sayings Still Mean What They Say?

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

One of my grandmother's favorite sayings was don't borrow trouble. A rain cancellation, a bad medical report, an unwelcome guest - she didn't believe in worrying about something that might not happen. According to Grandmother, when you borrow trouble, it's hard to return.

Who Put The “I” In Icon?

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

How did the iconic Rice-A-Roni become "The San Francisco Treat"? In 1946 a Canadian woman married an Italian immigrant, who worked in his father's, San Francisco, pasta factory. Because housing was scarce after WWII, the couple rented a room from an Armenian woman, who taught the Canadian woman how to make Armenian pilaf. When the couple had their own home, the Canadian woman made the pilaf for her brother-in-law. Inspired by the 1950's interest in convenience food, the brother-in-law suggested putting the pilaf in a box. After four years of experimenting in the pasta factory's test kitchen, the pilaf was turned into a one-pot, convenience food. Rice plus macaroni became Rice-A-Roni, the (made in) San Francisco treat.

Sick Of Eating Healthy?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

When I read package labels in the supermarket, am I the only one who thinks I'm reading about "hellth" food? A food manufacturer makes his products low fat. That sounds healthy, right? Wrong. The products have so much sugar I could serve them for dessert.

A Week In The Life Of A Projector Installation Engineer

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The world of projector installation has kept me busy for some time now. Not a vocation as such but I do like to take a pride in my work. I've seen the inside of all manner of schools and teaching institutions during this job. From the upper class private schools who use projector installation for inbuilt cinema entertainment to the local comprehensives who have just discovered technology.
