As the European Union includes more countries under it's already diverse umbrella, the need for diversity training within businesses is more important than ever. It is essential for a manger to be able to bridge cultural divides and provide equally for workers of all nationalities and genders. This is a guide to what you can expect to gain from a diversity training programme.

Diversity training is about creating equality in the workplace for employee wellbeing. Issues such as gender equality and cultural equality rank top of the issues at hand. It is a manager's responsibility to create a harmonious working environment devoid of any preferential treatment.

Diversity training will include information about types of communication. Each person has an individual way of understanding and sharing information. This can be assessed using a VARK score when a person is deemed to prefer a certain sense when it comes to communication, such as demonstrative hands on, or reading a manual for example. By understanding the diverse nature of communication, a manager is able to adjust training and communication methods.

Training will also include cultural awareness topics. Each nationality has a slightly different way of approaching situations and dealing with issues. What may be regarded as impolite in one country may well be the modus operandi in another. A manager needs to be able to express the company's policy in a manner that will help an employee adjust accordingly if necessary. It is also important to create a working atmosphere where cultural issues can be raised between workers to avoid conflict.

Another important aspect of diversity training is understanding and accepting sexual differences. Sexual equality encompasses creating equality between men and women, and accepting the sexual preferences of individuals. The aim of diversity training is to ensure that no one is discriminated against for private personal choices, their gender or for their cultural background.

Creating equality through understanding diversity does not stop with management training. It is the responsibility of the manager to pass on information to employees so that a harmonious working environment can be experienced by all. Encouraging employees to attend diversity training courses is one way that a manager can be assured that all issues can be addressed and conflict avoided in the work place.

Ultimately good managerial techniques rely on the manger being able to treat each employee equally, and show empathy and understanding regarding complex social issues that may affect the working atmosphere.
